Sarasota is a lovely city located south of Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico. It has many fine restaurants and beaches to enjoy. For years the Ringling Museum, home of the circus family, has been adding new attractions and buildings to their already extensive collection. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is one of Florida’s premier performance venues and host to a variety of entertainment including music, dance, opera, Broadway shows , stand up comedians as well as art events throughout the year. It’s also home to the Sarasota Orchestra which performs seven concerts per week comprising symphonic favorites from Baroque to modern .

We’ve eaten at the sushi restaurant in the Van Wezel several times and have always found it to be excellent. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is among the best that we’ve ever had.

New College of Florida offers a unique undergraduate experience for students. The school works in close collaboration with its local community, offering service-learning courses as well as internships to prepare students for their future careers. Their graduates have gone on to successful careers all over the world .

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens features numerous themed gardens including a butterfly garden, cactus garden and hummingbird garden as well as ponds, bridges and trails winding through shady oak hammocks. There’s also an unusual golden grove which sounds like something straight out of a fairytale.

The 100 acre garden is open to the public every day from 9am until 5pm. Tickets are $12 for adults but children under 12 get in free.

The Sarasota Jungle Gardens offers a wide variety of plant life including over 300 species of orchids, 150 varieties of bromeliads as well as other flowering plants and trees . There’s also a small museum about the history of horticulture and some rescued monkeys who like to show off their athletic skills for the visitors .

We always use this attraction as an opportunity to grab lunch at one of their restaurants which offer South American cuisine such as empanadas, arepas and cachapas with sweet  corn paste that is not found in many parts of the US.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are known for their orchid collection which features over 2000 unique species of orchids from around the world . Even if you’re not a huge fan of flowers there are many other attractions to be found here like the cacti and succulent gardens, bonsai displays as well as tropical fruit trees and butterfly conservatories .
