Newtown is a neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida. It shares boundaries with Downtown Sarasota, the bay front, US 41 and Fruitville Road to the West, Town & Country Estates on the North, Newtown Estates on the South and Parkland Estates on the East. The population was 2237 at time of the 2000 census.
There are approximately 500 single family homes that range from smaller units to mansions along Bay Front Drive and street lined waterfront homes along Palm Avenue. There is also a marina known as Point of Rocks Marina that consists of about 67 boat slips behind Palm Avenue where residents can dock their boats for easy access to downtown Sarasota Bradenton Beaches (about 10 mins away). Point of Rocks marina also has a large storage facility for sailboats and power boats.
Newtown is home to the Sarasota Yacht Club, which boasts members such as Ernest Hemingway who are known world wide as well as local fisherman.
There are many shops on the bay front and in town & country that provide all the essentials needed daily by Newtown residents including grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, dental offices, bars/restaurants (including waterfront dining near Point of Rocks Marina). There is also an excellent restaurant on Bay Front Drive called “Water Color Inn” where you can enjoy fine dining with a water view from almost every table.
The downtown skyline is visible from much of the neighborhood but it’s not intrusive due to its distance from the bay front. The downtown is about a 10-15 minute walk from the neighborhood, or you can take the trolley which picks up in town & country and stops at JFK library about every 15 minutes (about a 5 minute ride). There are many festivals throughout Sarasota that bring thousands of people to downtown each year including art festivals, the annual lighted boat parade on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, First Night(with over 20 stages offering live music), Gourmet Escape food festival and much more.
There is also an active artist community located near Point of Rocks Marina with galleries ranging from working studios to fine art galleries selling all types of artwork from local Sarasota artists as well as traveling exhibits. Newtown is also the home of many local musicians who play in restaurants and bars throughout Sarasota.
Additionally, there are many artists, photographers and other creative people who reside in Newtown full or part time.
Newtown hosts its own Halloween Parade and Party each year on Bay Front Drive with prizes for the most original costumes and candy galore.
During Sarasota’s mild winter season (November through April), tennis enthusiasts can be seen practicing at one of the two public courts located near Point of Rocks Marina, as well as jogging/walking along the waterfront streets or enjoying a stroll with their pets along Palm Avenue. There is also a great bike path that runs from downtown Sarasota all the way to Lido Key beach that traverses through Newtown neighborhood providing exercise enthusiasts easy access to miles of biking trails on both of this pathway. During the summer months, some residents can be seen grilling out and hanging out on their boats that are docked at Point of Rocks Marina.
Newtown is home to many community events such as the Memorial Day Parade in May, the 4th of July Fireworks Show over Sarasota Bay (the largest fireworks show between Tampa and Miami) with live music and activities held each year. Live music is also played throughout Newtown during certain summer festivals such as First Night and Gourmet Escape providing an eclectic mix of musical genres from jazz to rock ‘n roll.
